Pre-Existing Vulnerabilities Before the Storm Hits
Storm damage frequently capitalizes on pre-existing conditions that developed quietly over time:
- Loss of Shingle Flexibility: Thermal exposure bakes out volatile asphalt oils, turning shingles brittle so they crack under wind load instead of flexing.
- Weakened Sealant Strips: Factory thermal adhesive strips degrade, allowing strong winds to peel shingle edges upward.
- Reduced Fastener Holding Power: Natural wood expansion and contraction slightly back out nail fasteners or loosen the surrounding deck grip.
- Degraded Flashing Sealants: Sealants around chimneys, skylights, plumbing vents, and valleys dry out and crack.
The Wind Domino Effect
As storm-force winds pass over the roof, vibrations shake thousands of components for consecutive hours. The moment wind lifts a single shingle tab, airflow enters underneath and applies direct uplift pressure to adjacent rows. A few displaced tabs can quickly compromise entire roof slopes without being noticeable from ground level.
